In a recent meeting between Iceland’s Foreign Minister Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Gísladóttir brought a special Icelandic necklace to Rice as a gift. Rice expressed her appreciation.
“You will definitely see me wear this necklace in public,” Rice told Gísladóttir, as Fréttabladid reports.
The necklace Rice received was designed by Icelandic goldsmith Helga Ósk Einarsdóttir and is made from filigree, or wirework. Filigree jewelry has a long tradition in Iceland and is usually worn with the Icelandic national costume.
Rice’s necklace belongs to Einarsdóttir’s Milla collection and its shape is a reference to Heimskringla (“The Circle of the World”), the saga of the Norse kings.
