Complaints of Anti-Semitism in 400 year-old Easter Psalm

Rabbi Abraham Cooper Associate Dean at the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles has written a letter to the director of the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, demanding that it stops broadcasting Hallgrímur Pétursson’s (1614-1674) Hymns of the Passion, as has been done at Easter for decades, Ví reports.

The Center advocates the rights of Jews around the world.

In the letter, which is published on the blog site of Vilhjálmur Örn Vilhjálmsson, Cooper claims to be appalled by the anti-Semitic tone that is to be found in the hymns.

Included in the letter are examples from the text, which he uses to makes his case.

Páll Magnússon could not be reached for comment.
