Complaints about grass fires

Police in Akureyri received several complaints about grass fires at farms in the nearby countryside this weekend. According to the Akureyri Fire Department the farmers had permission from the local authority to burn the grass.

Farmers set grass fires so that new grass can grow faster, but smoke drifted over Akureyri and to farms on both sides of Eyjafjördur fjord, as mbl.is reports.

“These individuals burned withered grass with permission from the local authority in Akureyri, but the Akureyri Fire Department has nothing to do with these permits and the Fire Department was not consulted before these permits were granted, as it is not necessary according to law,” said a statement from the Akureyri Fire Department.

“The management of the Akureyri Fire Department believes these laws should be amended, as experts believe such fires should not be permitted,” the statement concluded.
