Cod liver oil promotes infant health

New Icelandic research reports that mothers-to-be who take cod liver oil can expect to deliver heavier babies than those who do not. Scientific research has shown that an infant’s weight can make them less susceptible to various diseases later in life. By taking a daily dose of cod liver oil, mothers-to-be can help prevent disease later in life for their unborn children.

According to the research, Icelandic infants weigh on average more than infants in other countries. The Morgunblaðið reports that the research, compiled by the Icelandic Public Health Institute, showed that healthy mothers-to-be who took cod liver oil early in their pregnancy were 11 times as likely to deliver babies weighing more than 4.5 kilograms.

The results of this research is published in the British medical publication, Obstetrics and Gynecology.
