Cod is God in Reykjavík

Reykjavík was by far the biggest fishing harbor in Iceland in 2012 with the volume of cod and other demersal fish species, that exclude only herring and capelin, being well above the country’s other harbors, according to the Directorate of Fisheries.

Reykjavík is twice as big as the second biggest harbor, Grindavík on Reykjanes peninsula. Third on the list is Vestmannaeyjar (the Westman Islands).

The top ten harbors listed in thousands of landed tons:

Reykjavík 90

Grindavík 41

Vestmannaeyjar 28

Hafnarfjörður 27

Siglufjörður 17

Akureyri 15

Sandgerði 15

Bolungarvík 15

Rif 14

Dalvík 13

One fourth of the total amount of demersal fish landed in 2012 were in the in the capital area harbors of Reykjavík, Hafnarfjörður and Kópavogur.
