Cocks to Be Prohibited in Akureyri

According to new regulations on the keeping of livestock currently being worked on at the Akureyri Town Council, roosters can only be kept on farms. Town residents must apply for licenses to keep hens and the approval of the closest neighbors is also required.

Jón Birgir Gunnlaugsson, director of environmental affairs in Akureyri, told ruv.is that roosters kept by local residents have caused annoyance.

He said there are three known breeders of fowl in the town at the moment and others appear interested in the practice, given that 20 people recently attended a course on the keeping of hens. The town council has also received requests on the matter.

Jón Birgir said it is important that people have proper facilities for the hens. The sheds must be insulated and have water and electricity.
