Overcast skies are set to hinder a full view of the stars this evening, when streetlights will be turned off the entire coastline from Reykjanesbaer to Akranes, west Iceland. This ‘darkening’ of the area from 10-10.30 pm is planned in connection with the opening of the Reykjavík International Film Festival today to draw attention to the “largest movie screen of them all – the sky”. This is reported in all the main media.
Electricity will not be taken off residential housing and the action will have no impact on streetlights or security systems. The municipalities of Dalvík, north Iceland, and Fljótsdalshérad, east Iceland, will also be darkened. Astronomer Thorsteinn Saemundson will be describing the view of the sky in a live broadcast on Rás 2 (RÚV) this evening.
