Closing of West Fjords Retirement Home Canceled

Residents of the retirement community Tjörn in Thingeyri in the West Fjords were notified yesterday that the retirement ward of Tjörn will not close for the summer as earlier planned and they will not have to move to Ísafjördur for four weeks.

“I am very grateful that I can stay,” Camilla Sigmundsdóttir, one of two residents of the retirement ward of Tjörn, told 24 Stundir. “I was worried about how I would handle the move; I’m so used to sleeping in the same bed,”

The Health Institution of Ísafjördur (HÍ) operates the retirement ward at Tjörn, while the local authorities in Thingeyri operate the five service apartments that belong to the retirement community.

To save money, HÍ had planned to close the retirement ward while the staff went on vacation and move the two residents of the ward to Ísafjördur in the meantime, but the Ministry of Health stepped in and enabled HÍ to keep the ward open for the summer.
