In the third quarter of 2010, 11,700 persons were unemployed and in search of a job, or 6.4 percent of the labor force. The unemployment rate was 6.1 percent for men and 6.8 percent for women, according to new statistics.

The number of unemployed persons increased by 800 since the third quarter of 2009, as stated on the website of Statistics Iceland.
The unemployment rate was highest among persons aged 16-24 years old, or 11.1 percent. The rate was six percent for 24-54 years old and 3.8 percent for ages 55-74. The unemployment rate in the capital region is eight percent and 3.6 percent in other regions.
