Classical Music Festival in Mývatn at Easter

The 11th annual classical music festival “Músík í Mývatnssveit” will be held in Iceland’s northeastern region of Mývatn at Easter. Two concerts with different programs will be held, on Maundy Thursday, April 9, and Good Friday, April 10.

The first of the two concerts is a chamber music recital with a piano trio by Beethoven and arias by Händel in the program, in addition to other well-known operatic arias and a debut of songs by Icelandic composer Atli Heimir Sveinsson, as described on visitmyvatn.is.

The second concert is dedicated to sacred music, including composers like Bach, Vivaldi and Iceland’s Thorkell Sigurbjörnsson. His work “The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross,” will be premiered at the occasion.

The performers at this year’s festival are soprano Hulda Björk Gardarsdóttir, violinist Laufey Sigurdardóttir, cellist Bryndís Björgvinsdóttir and pianist Aladár Rácz.

However, not just classical music will be played in Mývatn this Easter. Also on Good Friday, punky folk band Ljótu hálfvitarnir will perform in concert.

Additionally, the annual walk around lake Mývatn, dubbed “The Passion,” will take place on Good Friday, and Orkugangan, a 60-kilomerter long telemark ski walk, across unspoiled territory and past many natural treasures, is scheduled for the following day.
