City of Reykjavík to Provide Service to Refugees

Minister of Social Affairs Eygló Harðardóttir and Mayor of Reykjavík Dagur B. Eggertsson signed an agreement on Tuesday on city authorities being responsible for facilitating and assisting two groups of refugees who were offered asylum in the country by the Icelandic government.

The first group, who arrived late last year, consists of five LGBT individuals who were persecuted in their home countries because of their sexual orientation, reports.

The second group consists of 13 Syrian nationals, who will arrive in the country in the coming weeks.

At the signing, Eygló declared that she welcomed the cooperation with the City of Reykjavík, which will provide the refugees with the same social services, healthcare and education for children available to other residents.

The Red Cross will help the new arrivals adapt to life in Iceland.
