Christmas Tree Forest Opens Today

The Reykjavík Forestry Organization has announced that this year’s “Christmas Forest” is going to be Hólmsheiði and it opens to the public at 12.00 today (Saturday).

You are invited to come along and buy one of the trees the organization has been lovingly cultivating for years!

The first tree will be cut down by Reykjavík mayor Dagur B. Eggertsson.

The Christmas Forest tradition has been going on for years and is a good opportunity for Reykjavík residents to get a real Christmas tree for their homes, and to know for sure that it is homegrown and not shipped in from Norway or even firther (ahem) afield.

The idea of the forestry organization inviting people to come and cut its trees down is not as stupid as it sounds. RÚV reports that this year all proceeds of the tree sale will go on maintenance and improvements to the organization’s Heiðmörk forest.

For every Christmas tree chopped down, the organization will be planting at least 30 trees to replace it.
