Christmas Shopping Exceeds Brightest Hopes

According to Andrés Magnússon, manager of the Association of Trade and Services, Christmas shopping this year was better than many shopowners hoped for.

“Christmas shopping in 2008 was very poor. People are much happier now,” said Magnússon.

Last year’s decrease was about 18 Percent but the year before retailers enjoyed a seven percent increase.

“It is much better this year and in light of everything one can say that this exceeds the brightest hopes,” said Magnússon.

He stated that Christmas shopping started slowly this year but retailers agree that sales had been better than they dared to hope for.

Higher taxes next year rushed people into buying expensive electronic equipment, according to Magnússon. Morgunbladid reported.
