Christmas Dresses in Upcoming ASÍ Exhibition

By Iceland Review

Fifteen of Iceland’s most notable fashion designers will participate in the Christmas exhibition of Reykjavík’s ASÍ Art Museum this year, November 29 to December 21, by designing one red dress each to put on display in the museum.

“When the writer of the Njal’s Saga tells us about the first time the Viking Gunnar from Hlídarendi met Hallgerdur (who later became his wife with dramatic consequences), he tells us that she was dressed in red,” an ASÍ press release explains of the museum’s motives for a “Christmas Dresses” exhibition, adding:

“It is not often that this minimalistic author dwells on the way women were dressed so she must have been a striking sight that day, walking along Almannagjá [in Thingvellir] with her friends and maids. And the color has lost none of its attraction.”

Some of the participating designers are established while others graduated from the Iceland Academy of the Arts last spring. The designers are follows:

Ásgrímur Fridriksson, Birna Karen Einarsdóttir, Birta Björnsdóttir, Björg Ingadóttir, Erna Bergmann Björnsdóttir, Eygló Margrét Lárusdóttir, Gudjón Sigurdur Tryggvason, Hildur Yeoman, Inga Björk Andrésdóttir, María Ólafsdóttir, Kristina Róbertsdóttir Berman, Kolbrún Petrea Gunnarsdóttir, María Lovísa, Sara María Eythórsdóttir and Sunna Dögg.

The curator of the “Christmas Dresses” exhibition is Steinunn Helgadóttir.
