Chinese Embassy in Iceland Criticizes Björk

The Chinese Embassy to Iceland has issued a statement criticizing Icelandic singer-songwriter Björk for dedicating her song “Declare Independence” to Tibet during her concert in Shanghai on Sunday, saying her stunt has caused anger in China.

The statement, which was sent to Morgunbladid, reads that Tibet is an inseparable part of China. “The general understanding of the international community, including the Republic of Iceland, is that no country in the world recognizes Tibet as an ‘independent state.’ All efforts to separate Tibet from China will naturally be met with opposition from the Chinese as from other nations who have a modicum of justice.”

In a statement issued by Björk in relation to this case she explains that she is obligated to express all human emotions and that the need to declare independence is one of them. Björk’s father, Gudmundur Gunnarsson, told Morgunbladid that he is proud of his daughter’s declaration.
