Chess Master Defends Iceland Champion Title

Chess player Hannes Hlífar Stefánsson became Iceland’s Chess Champion for the tenth time in 11 years on Friday night with a victory over Gudmundur Kjartansson. No one has won the national championship in chess as often as Stefánsson.

“I played much better this year than last year. I experienced a slight shock last year when I lost two games in a row,” Stefánsson told Morgunbladid.

Stefánsson has won the national championship in chess every time he has participated for the past 11 years; he did not participate in 2000. “It is a very good feeling. It is always pleasing to win this tournament.”

No other chess player has won the championship ten times, but two have won seven times: Eggert Gilfer between 1918 and 1942 and Baldur Möller between 1938 and 1950.
