Icelandic Church Aid (Hjálparstarf kirkjunnar), the Red Cross in Reykjavík, the Salvation Army and the charity Maedrastyrksnefnd Reykjavíkur announced a joint Christmas charity initiative “Jólaadstodin 2010” on Tuesday.
It is expected that 4,500 families will be in need of food distribution before the holidays this year, up by 500 since 2009, Morgunbladid reports.
Many companies have been contacted in the hope that they will support the initiative and contributions from the public are also welcomed.
Elín Hirst, spokesperson for “Jólaadstodin 2010”, said the initiative has always enjoyed considerable goodwill in the community. The Red Cross will provide volunteers; last year 400 volunteers helped out with the food distributions.
Those in need of assistance can apply at the aforementioned charities or the Organization of the Disabled in Iceland December 1-10. The distributions will take place December 20-22 in Reykjavík, Akranes, Akureyri, Grindavík and Keflavík.
