Chap tournament held in Hornafjördur

Over 100 players participated in the chap championship, a popular Icelandic card game, held during the Lobster Festival in Hornafjördur, southeast Iceland, last weekend. The winner was Halldór Pétursson from Reykjavík (pictured).

Magnús Hjartarson, last year’s winner, came in second and Valgerdur Sigurdardóttir came in third. Both male and female players, aged nine to 90, may enter the competition. Most players are locals and Hornafjördur ex-pats. The chap played is a special, locally developed version of the game.

The next chap championship will be held during the UMFÍ Icelandic Youth Association teenage sports tournament in the region the first weekend in August.

The organizers aim to break the national record in participation in a card game tournament. There is no admission fee, but a certain sum will be donated to UNICEF for each participant.
