Changes Ahead for Iceland’s Housing Financing Fund

Minister of Social Affairs Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir announced on Friday that the state-run Housing Financing Fund (HFF) will undergo some changes following a complaint to the EFTA Surveillance Authority in regards to the state’s guarantee of HFF loans.

“The intention is to separate the general loan system from the social system without jeopardizing the HFF’s role as a complete service system,” Sigurdardóttir told Morgunbladid.

“The fund will thus continue to be part of the service and security system provided for all Icelanders,” Sigurdardóttir explained. “These planned changes will however give us an opportunity to strengthen the social part of the public property loan system.”
