Century Aluminum and two power utilities sign letter of intent

Fréttabladid reports that Nordurál, the Icelandic subsidiary of Century Aluminum, has signed a letter of intent with Reykjavík Energy (Orkuveita Reykjavíkur, OR) and Hitaveita Sudurnesja, a geothermal power utility in the south-west of Iceland, for supply of electricity to a 150 thousand ton aluminum smelter which is to be built at Helguvík, close to Keflavík, in 2010.

The letter of intent is non-binding.

According to Fréttabladid, Árni Sigfússon, the mayor of Reykjanesbaer, which includes Keflavík and surrounding townships, said that the greatest obstacle to building a smelter in Helguvík had now been removed.
