Cause of Death Determined for French Tourist

Preliminary autopsy results suggest that the 27-year-old French tourist who was found dead earlier this month died of hypothermia after a fall from Sandfell mountain in Southeast Iceland, RÚV reports. The young man was found on January 16th after Icelandic Search and Rescue was notified by rangers at Skaftafell National Park that the rental car he’d been driving had been parked near Sandfell for a long time.

The man arrived in Iceland on December 23rd and rented a car upon his arrival. Police investigations have determined that he was in his car in Skaftafell on December 29th, and was on the slope of Hvannadalshnjúkur, the highest mountain summit in Iceland, at 11:00 PM on December 30th. He then would have had to hike a further eight kilometers through an uninhabited area in the dark to the place where he fell and was later found.
