The Greater Reykjavík Police are being harshly criticized on social media for their reaction to two charges of of rape, which allegedly took place in two separate instances in the same apartment in Reykjavík, RÚV reports. Before the weekend, police arrested two men, suspected of the crimes, but released them within 24 hours, following a house search and a preliminary investigation. What infuriates critics is that the men were not placed in police detention.
Police are now reviewing details of the case and trying to determine whether the investigation was properly conducted, or mistakes made.
Police have confirmed that two charges were filed. According to Vísir’s sources, the attacks were brutal and the apartment equipped for violence. Both assaults occurred in October.
One of the suspects is in his twenties, the other one in his thirties. The older of the two is believed to have been part of the second crime. The victims are students at Reykjavík University and so is the younger suspect. Both women claim they were attacked following class-related events. At least in one of the cases, the victim is believed to have been drugged.
Update: Vísir reports that both suspects are believed to have left the country.
