Even though firefighters were quick to arrive, the cars were aflame when they got there and are severely damaged, probably beyond repair, Morgunblaðið reports.

A number of people assembled to observe the firefighters extinguish the fire. The condition of the person who required medical attention is unclear.

In a house fire in Tálknafjörður on Sunday, a family of four lost all their belongings. Their apartment was destroyed in the fire and a neighboring apartment, in which another four-person family lives, was damaged by smoke.

The local Red Cross, the people’s employers and others have provided the families with temporary housing and assisted them with buying food and supplies.

“We sense a lot of solidarity and everyone is contributing,” said Pálína Hermannsdóttir, the Red Cross representative in Vestur-Barðastrandasýsla county.

“They have been given clothing and toys for the children. The most important thing is that they escaped unharmed,” Pálina stated, adding that the people have been very stoic about their situation.

The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen of one of the apartments.
