Police in southern Iceland are now investigating three alleged sexual assault cases, all of which are considered to have occurred over this past weekend, Verslunarmannahelgi (Merchants’ Weekend), and during the week leading up to it. In one of the cases, police are investigating whether carbon monoxide poisoning may have been involved, mbl.is reports.
Two sexual assault cases were reported in camping areas in southern Iceland over the weekend. In both cases, it was acquaintances of the victim who notified police. The first case was made known to police on Friday and the second on Sunday morning. According to police, charges have been pressed by one of the alleged victims. Both alleged perpetrators were successfully tracked down and interrogated. The investigation continues.
A third incident took place on campgrounds in the Öræfasveit area last week. Police were notified of an alleged sexual offense and responded promptly; the suspect was taken for interrogation in Selfoss and the alleged victim received medical attention. The case is still under investigation. Elís Kjartansson, a representative of the South Iceland police investigative division, confirmed that it was being investigated whether carbon monoxide poisoning from propane may have caused the series of events which took place between the suspect and alleged victim in the tent.
Police will not provide further information before the results of blood tests are available, which will take a few weeks.
