Car Submerged in Jökulsárlón

A car became submerged in Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon around 4 pm yesterday afternoon.

The car was parked in the parking lot when it rolled into the lagoon. No one was inside the car at the time, reports.

The car is owned by a car rental company and was being rented by a foreign tourist of around 50. It is not yet certain how the accident occurred but police assume that the car was not parked correctly.

Police and search and rescue teams from the nearby town of Höfn are evaluating options to recover the car, which is now drifting out to sea, but strong currents are complicating the task.

The woman is on her way back to Reykjavík. Her luggage is inside the submerged car.
