Car Sinks in Glacial Lagoon

Imagine standing by Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, Southeast Iceland, admiring the view, when, suddenly, you see a car floating in front of you. That’s what happened to a young tourist couple as they stood photographing the lagoon. “Is that our car?” they asked. And so it was.

The car floated for up to 15 minutes before it suddenly sank. You can see a video of it here.

Travel guide Jónas Jónasson arrived just ahead of the couple with a group of seven tourists. He told Vísir, “We were frightened at first. We thought at first that someone was in the car, that this was a suicide.”

The couple had parked beside Jónas’ vehicle. They were shocked to see their car in the water. All their baggage was inside, including passports and flight tickets; everything but their cameras. The couple insisted they had applied the parking brake.

According to Vísir, cars have landed in the lagoon at least twice before. That’s why Jónas wondered if it might be necessary to install some kind of barrier to prevent this from happening again.

Luckily, no one was injured, but two people were standing nearby when they heard the car start sliding.
