Car Removed from Jökulsárlón

The car which became submerged in Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon after rolling out of a parking lot on September 30 was removed from the lagoon today.

As reported earlier, no one was inside the car when it sank into the water. The car is owned by a car rental company and was being rented by a foreign tourist of around 50 years old. Police assume that the car was not parked correctly.

The Hornafjörður search and rescue team assisted staff from electronics services company Tæknivík with the operation. A multi-beam device was used to locate the car, reports.

Strong currents in the lagoon had earlier complicated the operation.

The car is destroyed but there is no word yet on the state or whereabouts of the driver’s luggage.
