A few Icelandic fishing vessels that usually catch capelin have begun fishing blue whiting since it doesn’t appear as if the Ministry of Fisheries will issue a quota on capelin in the near future.
Two ships belonging to fishing company Esja hf. brought ashore a full load of blue whiting in Eskifjördur in east Iceland last weekend. They had caught the fish south off the Faroe Islands, Morgunbladid reports.
The total quota issued for blue whiting fishing in Iceland this season is 95,739 tons.
Capelin was recently found off Langanes peninsula in northeast Iceland.
