Numerous people convened last night in front of the Icelandic consulate in Nuuk, Greenland, to light candles in memory of Birna Brjánsdóttir, the 20-year-old Icelandic woman whose body was found on the south coast of Reykjanes peninsula yesterday, RÚV reports. She is thought to have been murdered. Two men are in police custody, suspected in her disappearance, both of them Greenlanders and crew members of the trawler Polar Nanoq.
Aviâja E. Lynge, who organized the event, believes most Greenlanders are very saddened by Birna’s death. “There isn’t much we can do,” she stated, “but we can show our sympathy.”
The news website Sermitsiaq reports that about 400 people assembled in front of the consulate. Birna was also remembered in the towns Aasiaat, Maniitsoq, Paamiut, Qaqortoq, Nanortalik and Uummannaq.
