Iceland’s Cabinet yesterday passed a proposal by Minister of Justice Björn Bjarnason to rent two additional rescue helicopters for the Icelandic Coast Guard. This story is covered in all the Icelandic media. The Icelandic Coast Guard currently owns two helicopters that are frequently called out on search or rescue operations, and helicopters from the US military, stationed in Keflavík, have been on call as backup or when the Icelandic helicopters have been disabled. With the removal of US troops from Keflavík, however, concerns have arisen as to the availability of helicopters for emergencies.
