CEO of Icelandair, Sigurdur Helgason announced at a board meeting yesterday that he will be resigning on May 31 after twenty years as head of the company.
The board agreed that Hannes Smárason, board director, would take on Helgason’s duties and focus on Icelandair’s expansion abroad.
Helgason said he felt it was time for a change. ” I’ve been very lucky. Icelandair is the most interesting Icelandic company to work for, and I’ve had wonderful staff. ”
Helgason was voted businessman of the year 2004 by business magazine Frjáls Verslun. He was noted for the incredible success of Icelandair during the last three years, a time which has proved difficult for most other airlines. Last year saw the second highest revenue of Icelandair since the company’s beginnings.
