Burial Rites Released in Icelandic

The bestselling novel Burial Rites by Australian author Hannah Kent, which is set in Iceland, was released in Icelandic translation on Friday, ruv.is reports.

The book has received rave reviews, won a number of awards and has been translated into over a dozen languages. A Hollywood movie starring Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence is in the making.

Burial Rites tells the story of the last woman to be executed in Iceland, maid Agnes Magnúsdóttir. Agnes was executed in North Iceland in 1830 for murdering a man by the name of Natan Ketilsson.

The book was translated by Jón Stefán Kristjánsson and is available under the title Náðarstund.

Kent came to Iceland as an exchange student 11 years ago and heard about Agnes’ story for the first time. Hannah researched the young woman’s life and finally published her debut in 2013.
