Budget Committee Completes Icesave Evaluation

By Iceland Review

The majority of the Althingi parliament’s Budget Committee completed their evaluation of the government’s bill on the state guarantee regarding Icesave yesterday. Their evaluation doesn’t include any changes to the bill.

Chairman of the Budget Committee Gudbjartur Hannesson of the Social Democrats told Fréttabladid that the evaluation will likely be submitted to parliament today.

“Then we have to wait for the minority’s evaluation. After that the matter can be discussed at a date determined by the speaker of parliament,” Hannesson added. He believes an important phase has now been completed.

Hannesson said he is nearly certain that the bill will be passed before the end of this month. However, he cannot estimate how each of the MPs will vote.

The representatives of both ruling parties, the Social Democrats and the Left-Greens, on the Budget Committee voted for the bill.

Some Left-Green MPs have announced their opposition to it.
