Budget airlines Norwegian and Easy Jet are looking into the possibility of international flights to Akureyri, North Iceland. However, Greenland Express, which was considering offering flights between Akureyri and Denmark, has shelved its plans.
“[Preparations] have taken a long time and we have often been close to landing airlines,” Bergþór Erlingsson of the aviation cluster Air66N, a collaboration between tourism companies in North Iceland, told ruv.is.
Greenland Express’ first flight was planned yesterday. Locals had prepared to welcome the first guests, ordering a big cake and all. There was more than one reason for the airline canceling its plans, Bergþór said, including few bookings.
He believes that a better known airline may be able to attract more attention to the route.
