A woman who broke her leg in Nike-sponsored contest in Iceland is suing the sportswear company for USD 1.3 million (EUR 1.2 million), according to oregonlive.com.
Kate Martini Freeman of Los Angeles alleges her severe leg fractures (dislocated ankle and broken tibia and fibula, requiring many surgeries) were partly the result of participating runners’ not being allowed to use anything but Nike gear, or gear provided by Nike, during the contest.
She claims that due to snow and ice on mountain trails in dark conditions, better safety equipment was needed, such as spikes, poles, and lighting devices.
The run was one of three sponsored here by Nike in November, 2013, for the #RunViking competition.
Freeman sues Nike for up to USD 300,000 (EUR 276,000) in medical costs and lost wages, and up to USD 750,000 (EUR 690,000) for pain and loss of enjoyment of life. Her husband seeks up to USD 250,000 (EUR 230,000) for loss of society, companionship, consortium and services.
