Broadcaster Apologizes to President Over ‘Snide’ Headline

RÚV has apologized to the office of the President of Iceland and to the historian Guðjón Friðriksson for a news story on the awarding of the Order of the Falcon this Wednesday.

The apology was for the article headline which appeared to insinuate that Guðjón received the Knight’s Cross of the Order of the Falcon honor because he is the President’s biographer. Some people felt it hinted at some underhandedness which did not exist.

The apology emphasizes the fact that it is not in the President’s hands to decide who will be awarded the Order of the Falcon, as there is a committee which decides on nominations. The President then chooses from among the nominees presented by the committee. Guðjón Friðriksson was among 14 people honored on Wednesday, Iceland’s National Day.

The headline in question was changed from “President’s Biographer Gets Order of the Falcon” to “14 Awarded Order of the Falcon at Bessastaðir,” Vísir reports.

Iceland Review Online published a story based on the controversial RÚV article under the headline, “Presidential Biographer on National Day Honors List,” and though our editors do not believe this to be controversial or disrespectful, we have nevertheless opted to change the headline in line with the original RÚV source material.
