British Hiker Severely Injured after Fall

A British hiker fell approximately five meters into a rocky gorge, Hamragil by Þórsmörk in the southern highlands, yesterday afternoon, suffering a number of fractures. She underwent surgery at the Landspítali national hospital in Reykjavík yesterday.

Her injuries are considered to be severe but not life threatening, reports. The woman was picked up by an ambulance, which drove towards a Coast Guard helicopter by which she was taken to Landspítali.

The woman, who is around 50, was hiking with a group of people along a marked trail when she appears to have slipped. The circumstances of the accident are not clear and the police in Hvolsvöllur are investigating it.
