Bright Future is the largest political party in Iceland’s capital, according to a new poll carried out by the University of Iceland’s Social Science Research Institute for daily Morgunblaðið ahead of the municipal elections on May 31.

Bright Future holds 29.3 percent support (down from 29.4 percent in November’s poll), followed by the Independence Party with 25 percent (down from 26.6 percent) and the Social Democratic Alliance with 21.8 percent (up from 17.6 percent). The Pirate Party has 10.5 percent (up from 10.1 percent) and the Left-Greens with 8.2 percent (down from 9 percent). Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson’s Progressive Party are last on the list with 2.8 percent (up from 2.3 percent).
According to the results, the Independence Party would lose one seat.
Twenty-three percent of voters under 30 support the Pirate Party but only 3 percent of voters over 60. At the same time, the Independence party has 39 percent support among voters over 60 but only 14 percent among voters under 30.
Forty-one percent of voters aged 30 to 45 support Bright Future while only 11 percent over 60 say they would vote for the party.
A Gallup poll published last week found that the Independence Party is the largest party in Reykjavík with 27.5 percent support followed by Bright Future with 25 percent while the Progressive Party has 4.8 percent.
