Breaking News: Progressive Party to Form New Government

sigmundurdavidgunnlaugsson_althingiProgressive Party Chair, Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, has been given the mandate by President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson to lead discussions in forming a new government after Saturday’s election.

Sigmundur Davíð was called to a meeting with the president shortly before midday today.

The Progressive Party came second to the Independence Party in percentage of votes in the election on Saturday, but increased its support rating more than any other party and earned 19 seats in parliament, same as the Independence Party.
