Boy Killed in Hit-and-Run Accident

A four-year-old boy died in the intensive care unit at the National Hospital in Reykjavík on Saturday after being hit by a car in Keflavík on Friday. The driver fled the scene but a man in his 30s was arrested on Saturday in relation to this case.

The suspect will be held in custody until Thursday this week, Morgunbladid reports.

“Local residents are shocked by this accident,” said Rev. Baldvin Ingvason. A prayer meeting was held in Keflavíkurkirkja Church on Saturday and another meeting is scheduled for today at 6 pm.

Many have placed candles and flowers at the location of the accident, on the intersection of Vesturgata and Birkiteigur.

After the accident, the Sudurnes Police Department requested eyewitness accounts that could help police locate the driver. Police received many tips which led to the arrest of the man on Saturday.

Sudurnes Chief of Police Gunnar Schram would not confirm whether the driver is suspected of having been intoxicated when he hit the boy. Blood and urine samples were taken when he was arrested.

The man has not confessed to the hit-and-run, but Schram said that damages to his vehicle may confirm his guilt. Schram has requested assistance from the Capital Region Police technical department to investigate the car. The investigation is ongoing.
