Bottlenose Whale Found Dead in North Iceland

A bottlenose whale was found dead on the seashore by the farm Nes in Höfdahverfi, near the mouth of Eyjafjördur fjord in northeast Iceland yesterday. It is believed to be one of the four whales that have been sojourning in the Akureyri harbor for several weeks.

“It is obviously one of those in Pollurinn [Akureyri harbor] because a buoy is stuck to its tale,” wrote Thóra G. Thorsteinsdóttir, who discovered the beached whale, to Morgunbladid.

Since mid-August, a bottlenose whale and her calf had been residing in Pollurinn to the delight of Akureyri residents. In mid-September they were joined by two other bottlenose whales.
