Book Prize for Hjörtur Marteinsson’s Alzheimer Poems

The Tómas Guðmundsson Literature Prize was awarded to Hjörtur Marteinsson for his collection of poems called Alzheimer-tilbrigðin (‘Alzheimer Variations’), reports.

The three members of the jury, Ragnhildur Pála Ófeigsdóttir, Bjarni Bjarnason and Davíð Stefánsson, chose his book out of 48 manuscripts.

They praised Hjörtur’s ironic tone and peculiar and magical attraction. They concluded that the poet knows how to put into words the impalpable feeling of watching a loved one’s memory fade away, without much hope of return.

In 2000, Hjörtur earned the same award for his novel AM oo, and in 2007, he received the Ljóðstafur Jóns úr Vör Poetry Award. He has previously published two books of poetry, Ljóshvolfin (1996) and Myrkurbil (1999).

The first edition of Alzheimer-tilbrigðin, published by Tunglið, will soon become available in bookstores.
