Book of Icelanders App Garners International Attention

An app for tracing the family relations of Icelanders, Íslendingaapp, developed by three students at the University of Iceland as part of a competition organized by the university and deCode Genetics, has garnered worldwide media attention in recent days.

The app uses the database Íslendingabók (Book of Icelanders) which contains genealogical information about Icelandic citizens and residents of Iceland dating back 1,200 years.

Using ‘bump’ technology, the app allows two users to ‘bump’ each other’s phones to see how closely they are related. The designers’ slogan “Bump the app before you bump in bed” has led the app to be dubbed the “anti-incest app” by the media.

The app can be downloaded here.
