Bonfires in Reykjavík Postponed Due to Weather

By Iceland Review

All bonfires in Reykjavík, planned for tonight to celebrate the thirteenth and last day of Christmas, have been postponed until Saturday, due to weather. Strong winds in excess of 20 meters per second are expected in South and West Iceland today. In all likelihood, bonfires in some other municipalities will be postponed, but no announcements have yet been made.

Festivities in Kópavogur are expected to be held according to plan, starting at 5 pm. No bonfire is scheduled, but a fireworks show is scheduled at 6 pm. A torch walk is panned at 5:30 pm. In Hafnarfjörður, the festivities begin at 6 pm with music and conclude at 7 pm with a fireworks show.

Decisions are yet to be made regarding bonfires in Akranes, Selfoss and Grundarfjörður. Festivities in Hornafjörður have been postponed until Saturday.

It is not unusual for bonfires to be postponed on January 6, due to lack of cooperation from the weather gods. Last year, that’s precisely what happened in many communities.

Update: Festivities in Kópavogur have been postponed indefinitely.
