An suspicious object, which was believed to be the remains of a bomb, was found outside Hverfisgata 4, close to the government offices, this morning. The bomb squads of the Reykjavík Metropolitan Police and the Icelandic Coast Guard were called to the scene and a large area in the city center was cordoned off.

At approximately 10.30 am the object was destroyed by a specialized robot, mbl.is reports.
Commissioner Stefán Eiríksson at the Reykjavík Metropolitan Police told mbl.is that the explosive device was authentic.
However, there was no charge in the bomb; it probably went off earlier in the morning. Stefán would not make further comments on the case while the investigation is ongoing, apart from to say that police have a good picture of the day’s course of events.
Security cameras should have caught footage of the person who placed the bomb outside Hverfisgata 4. Posters with political propaganda were found near the scene but Stefán would not say whether there may be a connection.
