A strange object was found last week during a regular patrol and maintenance trip to the island Eldey off Southwest Iceland, a nature reserve since 1974 for its birdlife; the island boasts one of the largest gannet colonies in the world.

It is feared that the object might be a bomb from World War II. If it goes off, it might jeopardize the birdlife on the island, as reported on the website of the Environment Agency of Iceland.
The Icelandic Coast Guard’s explosive experts are now investigating the matter and if the object turns out to be a bomb, will do all in their power to prevent damage to the environment.

Eldey is off limits for the public and can only be visited with permission from the Environment Agency.
