Bomb Found Near Borgarnes

The bomb squad of the Icelandic Coast Guard was called out on Monday afternoon after a bomb was reported near the tent site in Borgarnes, a village in West Iceland.

The bomb was found in an old airfield when rescue squad members were preparing for a fireworks display as the final event of a national sports event. Monday was the final day of the so-called Merchants Day weekend (verslunarmannahelgi). The bomb, found at the west end of the airfield, was a two inch high Mortar, of British origin. Bombs of that type have often been found before in various part of the country, remnants of the British occupation of Iceland in 1940-41.

The bomb was successfully detonated by specialists according to a news release from the Coast Guard, according to mbl.is.
