Bolungarvík celebrates Week of Love

The inhabitants of the village Bolungarvík in the Westfjords (pop. 1,000) released balloons with messages of love into the sky yesterday to mark the beginning of the town’s annual Week of Love.

“We are happy about spreading the message,” Mayor of Bolungarvík Grímur Atlason told Fréttabladid. “The purpose of the Week of Love is not just bed-hopping but also friendship.”

Week of Love is celebrated until next Saturday, including concerts, a hugging course and a cruise through the Ísafjardardjúp fjord.

It is mainly organized for locals, but tourists visit Bolungarvík in increasing numbers during the Week of Love as well, according to Atlason.

“It’s no Fish Day; it’s not that kind of atmosphere. There will be small beautiful events throughout the week,” Atlason said. “But the message of love is spread outside the town limits and around the country.”
