The body discovered north of Höfn on August 18 may be that of a French citizen. On their Facebook page, the South Iceland police posted the following this afternoon:
“The South Iceland police and the forensics team of the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police continue to sort out tips they have received concerning the discovery of a body in Laxárdalur, Nes, on Tuesday, August 18.
Among other things, the forensics team is investigating whether the body could possibly be that of a French citizen, who arrived in the country in October of last year. The forensics team is currently working with French authorities on the case, as well as a research lab in Sweden, which, among other things, conducts DNA analysis for the Swedish National Forensics Centre. A confirmation of identity can take some time before the deceased may be positively identified. No further information can be provided at this time.”
The statement is signed by Gylfi H. Gylfason, chairman of the forensics team of the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police and Þorgrímur Óli Sigurðsson, deputy superintendent at the office of the South Iceland chief of police.
