The Blue Lagoon looks deserted these days. Because of plans for expansion, it was drained last week, mbl.is reports. It will reopen January 22, once it has been enlarged by 2,000 square meters (21,500 square feet). A new and larger massage area will replace the old one.
Construction of 60 additional hotel rooms is also underway, bringing the total number of hotel rooms to 95 by next year. The new part of the hotel will be surrounded by lava. In addition, there are plans for a new lagoon area to open next year, surrounded by high lava rocks, providing guests with a shelter from the winds.
CEO Dagný Hrönn Pétursdóttir says that area will offer guests an adventurous and unique experience. She says 100 people are working day and night on the renovations. The 2,000 square meter expansion will bring the size of the lagoon to 7,000 square meters (75,300 square feet).
Once the lagoon reopens on January 22, the entrance fee will go up by ISK 700 (USD 5.44, EUR 5).
